|
Huddersfield Heat Basketball was founded in 1991 by Graham Timmins and current General Manager Eduardo Perez, and started as a small club based at the University of Huddersfield. As part of arrangement of the club being based there, the club also took charge of re-starting the BUSA representative side at the University and thus became one of the few external clubs to be based there.
In their inaugural season the club competed within the local Huddersfield basketball league. As the number of players grew at the club, plans for entry into the regional Yorkshire league were made, together with a second mens team to compete in the Leeds and District league. The club continued to develop through the local and regional league structures, growing steadily in size. Coach Timmins continued to develop the playing squad, integrating many of the students who came to study at Huddersfield.
Highlights from the local and regional league years were two Yorkshire Cup triumphs, two Yorkshire divisional championships, and a number of cup final appearances in both Huddersfield and Leeds leagues. In preparation for bigger things, the club entered its first Founders Cup competition in the 1999-2000 season. A semi-final appearance in this year, followed by two subsequent quarter final appearances, began to stand Huddersfield Heat as one of the up and coming non-national basketball clubs in the area.
At the end of 1999-2000 season, Coach and co-founder Graham Timmins was to leave the club, to move to Scotland, which meant Eduardo Perez gained the Head Coach role to go alongside that of club General Manager.
The 2005-2006 season was to become a landmark year. The club was accepted into the National League ranks for the first time, and there would be no looking back. The club developed rapidly on and off the court, and the first season at national level was marked with a fourth placed finish in Division 3 North, together with an appearance in the playoffs. The Heat were also moving from strength to strength, off the court as new partnerships were being formed across the community.
Currently, in this the 2009-2010 season, the club has an exciting future. Following years of struggle based at the University, and with no long term sports aspirations on the horizon, the club has found a permanent home at Rishworth School, and has not looked back since. A new look team, a thriving community programme, and England Basketball 2 Star Accreditation (with 3 Star and Clubmark imminent) all signs pointing to a bright future. The club now works on exciting future partnerships that will enable the Heat to continue their success on and off the court.
